InnoSportLab ’s-Hertogenbosch (ISLDB) is developping a motivationtoolbox in cooperation with the KNGU (Koninklijke Nederlandse Gymnastiek Unie; Dutch Gymnastic Union) and sport club Flik-Flak. The toolbox distinguishs between age and is meant for top gymnasts.
Elite sport coaches do often have limited insight and knowledge about the motivation of a talented young gymnast during their development towards a mature elite gymnast.
Therefore, they don not know what they can and may expect during the development of an elite gymnast and how to response. Because of this unawareness, there can be (unnecessary) dropouts of talented gymnasts. The aim of this project is to reduce these dropouts. This by providing insight and knowledge about the (age related) motivation and motivation problems to gymnastic trainers and coaches.
In order to realise the aim of this project, a literature review of motivation, motivation in sport and the development of motivation has been done. The Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) is used as a basis for this project. Experts in motivation and the development of motivation have been spoken. In addition, (semi) structured interviews were conducted by elite gymnasts and coaches (N=24). On the basis of these interviews, questionnaires are drawn up and purchased by elite gymnasts and ex-gymnasts (N=62).
With the results of the literature review, the interviews and the questionnaires, a motivation toolbox is developed. This motivation toolbox consists of an in-depth research document, a poster and a booklet on basis of the SDT (competition, autonomy and relatedness) with concrete tips for coaches to increase motivation.
